Practice typically occurs during Friday, with three seperate sessions. In these sessions, drivers can go on the track and get to know the track, its conditions, and their car. Drivers can test the track in any order they want, as long as they do not hinder the practice of other drivers in the session. The teams can also practice things such as communications and pit stops. The lap times of the drivers are recorded for documentation purposes, and do not affect championship standings in any way.

The F1 Qualifying session is a series of 3 timed sessions, wherein drivers who were not able to perform lap times good enough to beat other drivers at the track are eliminated, until only 10 remain, or half the roster. These 10 have another go at the track and the fastest gets to start the race on what is called the pole position. This position has an advantage as they start ahead of everyone else for the race. The first, second, and third placers of qualifying also get points for the Drivers Championship, giving 3, 2, and 1 point respectively.

This format made its debut in 2021 at Silverstone. It is a race run over 100km, lasting around half an hour. It was designed to provide the fans a short, fast paced mini-race, full of tight battles and close racing, before the main race the following day. The results of qualifying determine the positioning of drivers at the start of the sprint, while the end results of the sprint determine the positions of the drivers on race day. The first, second, and third drivers are all awarded championship points, amounting the same as opposed to qualifying; 3, 2, and 1 point, respectively.
